London Low Emission Zone
All vehicles over 1.205t ULW are affected by the London LEZ.
There will be a phased introduction from February 2008 through to January 2012. Different vehicles will be affected over time and increasingly tougher emissions standards will apply.
The LEZ will affect lorries, buses, coaches, large vans (exceeding 1.205 tonnes ULW), and specialist vehicles that are derived from lorries and vans including; motorised horse boxes, breakdown and recovery vehicles, refuse collection vehicles, gritters, sweepers, concrete mixers, tippers, removals lorries, fire engines, motor caravans, ambulances and large hearses (over 2.5 tonnes).

From 4th Feb 2008 heavy vehicles exceeding 12 tonnes GVW and registered before 1/10/2001 must be converted to achieve Euro3 Particulate.
From January 2012 the required standard will be raised to Euro4 for Particulate. Vehicles registered after 1/10/2006 already comply.

From July 2008 heavy vehicles between 3.5 and 12 tonnes GVW and registered before 1/10/2001 must be converted to achieve Euro3 Particulate.
From January 2012 the required standard will be raised to Euro4 for Particulate. Vehicles registered after 1/10/2006 already comply.

From July 2008 passenger vehicles with more than 8 passenger seats, exceeding 5 tonnes GVW, and registered before 1/10/2001, must be converted to achieve Euro3 Particulate levels.
From January 2012 the required standard will be raised to Euro4 for Particulate. Vehicles registered after 1/10/2006 already comply.

From Oct 2010 vehicles between 1.205 tonnes ULW and 3.5 tonnes GVW, and motor caravans and ambulances between 2.5 tonnes and 3.5 tonnes GVW, and registered before 1/1/2002, must be converted to achieve Euro3 Particulate.

From Oct 2010 passenger vehicles with more than 8 passenger seats, below 5 tonnes GVW, and registered before 1/1/2002, must be converted to achieve Euro3 Particulate levels.


All public roads, including certain motorways within the boundary (except the M25), are included within the LEZ. The following motorways are also included:
• M1 south of London Gateway Services
• M4 east of Junction 3
• M4 spur to Heathrow
